The NCSL-Esmee Fairbairn project:
a secondary perspective

This project, a study of leadership in 21 secondary schools, sought to describe and develop learning-centred leadership in both its instructional and interpersonal dimensions, with a specific focus upon the practice of middle leaders.

The main aims of the project were to:

Seven research associates were appointed to support the work of the project (all of whom were leaders in schools), which used an interactive case study methodology incorporating an action enquiry dimension. Each research associate conducted work in three schools.

A protocol was agreed to group the findings from the visits to the case study schools under the following headings:*
